I tell everyone this and I mean it. Buy a journal. Carry it with you everywhere you go. And I mean everywhere. Write about your favorite moments, your least favorite moments, ideas, grocery lists, people you’ve met, strangers you’ve walked past on the street, favorite quotes, words to remember, what the sky looked like at 7pm, new songs you’ve discovered and what they mean to you, your childhood, places you want to go or places you’ve been, write about your passions, how you feel in this exact moment, draw out the mountains, scribble all over the pages. And when that one gets full, buy a new one. Reread it in 2 years, 20 years, when you need a good laugh, when you’re crying on your bathroom floor, read it to your children. You need to remember these moments in your life. They are so important.
Like when I switched my Senegalese twists out for a bun with bangs temporarily my white ass manager was like “Yes!! Such a good, clean, professional look” 😒
freaking terrible
Like when I was working at Chick-Fil-A and came back from a cruise with my hair twisted and fresh sun kissed skin, 3 managers sat me down to tell me my look was “inappropriate” and that they wanted their employees to look like they were walking into a “fortune five hundred company.” Immediately after the sit down I called my mother crying, which resulted in me putting in my 2 weeks notice the same day.
For lurking ass team “it’s just hair”.
:(
The bullshit we go thru because of who we are smfh
When i worked at McDonald’s i got yarn twists and they wouldnt fit into one hair net (so i wore 2) and my manager said it was unhygienic. Keeping in mind that she would be in the kitchen with her hair flying about and yarn twists stop my hair falling out all together. She told me to come back when i took them out
she almost lost her job but white folks will swear our hairstyles are totally up for the taking
People would literally talk shit when I had my afro at work. So I cut it just to make the comments stop.
You cut your hair so people would stop talking about you??? Guuuuuurl hell no. That wouldn’t have been me.
They don’t know that straightening hair is torture to the mind, body and soul. It’s expensive and they aren’t paying for it and it’s damaging to the mind because you are forced to deny your heritage thus crushing your already battered soul.
Plus straightened hair looks terrible but other hair looks “unhygienic” and “uncombed”
I quit a job I had for only 3 weeks after they told me my hair was an aesthetic problem
And then there are the people who say dumb shit like “oh your hair grew” or “you change your hair so much” how about you suck my ass
My hair’s pretty basic, just a mess. I don’t think I’ll get much trouble for it, but you guys are just making more nervous now
You won’t get shit for it compared to a poc with “black hair”. They’re all talking about things like textured hair and box braids and cornrows, things we’ve been forced to remove/cut off because it’s “not professional” and “dirty looking”. You don’t have to live in fear and worry about losing a job over having “unprofessional hair” they might just tell you to tidy yourself up.
17 year old white child, your “basic, messy hair” does not compare to black hair. Ever. Don’t be that person.
Why do white people think their messy hair is similar to black hair?
It’s almost like they think black hair is a mess in it’s natural state. Oh wait
It’s not just white people….
Over the summer I worked with my sister and one day she wore her hair in a really big afro. It was really cute (kinda like LeeLa James). All of the Hispanic co workers told her that she looked crazy and she should go back home and fix it and put it in a ponytail or something.
Shit if my white co-worker saw my TUMBLR I WOULD BE FIRED!! Can’t even be my BLACK SUPPORT STUFF!!!
These documented incidents hurt my heart. Black people living their lives carefree and unencumbered is always a problem for white incompetence and its apologists. That includes other non-blacks that do everything in their power to appear normal by white societal standards. Fuck ‘em all!
I work at Culver’s( mid west restaurant) and I came with fresh box braids all neat and I put them in a braid behind my shoulder since that’s the rules. My WHITE manager gon tell me “you might have to change your hair if customers complain or if it messes with the aesthetic of the restaurant” when I say I looked at her like this deadass I was like
Foolery at its finest
I always get “what if you want to get a promotion” or “will you cut your locs off if they say you can’t have them anymore”… Short answer, fuck em. I will not be cutting a damn thing unless I make that decision on my own. You hired me when I had locs, you gon be satisfied with em until I see fit to change. Period.
